Tuesday...August 25...another day in paradise...Kodiak Island

Up early again this morning 5am. A quick breakfast and we are off to the docks to meet Shawn & go fishing. The boat is El Gato, our captain is Sam. We are fishing with 3 young men on vacation from the Connecticut area, John, Aaron & Brian.

The views from the boat harbor are wonderful this early morning. We travel a short distance up a channel & out to the sea. We pass under a high bridge that links the city of Kodiak with a very small island that has a couple of other marinas that dock bigger commercial boats. We catch a glimpse of a couple sea lions going out of the channel. Lots a lovely houses on the shoreline along with a number of fish canneries.

There are several other small boats also going out fishing today and we also get a good view of the ferry leaving. It is a lovely but chilling morning. The sun is out, it's about 42F. We have a lot of activity from the birds. The ever nosey gull is always around, but today we are entertained by several Puffins. Fishing is fun, but tooooo much work for me. I have a blister after reeling in about the 4th Halibut. Not much sympathy from the others (probably because I have the most fish). Mikey does catch Halibut & a nice Silver Salmon (AKA: Coho). I suppose by Kodiak standards the fishing wasn't great, but it was great for the two of us.

In the afternoon, as the temp began to rise I climbed up on the bridge and do what I do best on a boat. I BH in Kodiak....
We spend a lot of time (probably 2 hours or more) watching Humpback Whales all around the boat. They are breaching repeatedly in front of us, slapping their fins and blowing spray. One gets a little too close to our small boat for my comfort. But it was so exciting to see the Whales teaching their babies to act like a whale???

When we return to the harbor we stop at a pier and the Kodiak Smoking employees meet us with wheelbarrows to collect our fish, will process and ship them home for our friends & family. YumO.....Mikey gets to do another feed....

Shawn tells of a boat in the marina across the bridge that's been on "World Most Deadliest Catch". We hop in the car and check it out. It's name is Cornelia Marie.

While we are looking at it, Mikey strikes up a conversation with a young man walking down the dock to a very nice looking boat, The Trailblazer. This boat was also filmed on that tv show. But the young man tells us that their episode was not aired this season. He's not too happy about that. He proudly proclaimed that the owner of The Trailblazer just made a $1.4million upgrade. Mikey thinks for sure we will see that boat on The Deadliest Catch program soon! He introduces us to a few other crewmen, I grab a photo op & they present us with a few fillets of Salmon & Halibut. Then they return to their work.

Dinner at Henry's again tonight (it's really good food) and then back to the lodge for our last night on the Emerald Isle.
